Life is a BEACH

Another example of evolutionary art form. Music, Opera, set design
redefining and Improvising on traditional formats.
Shawn and I saw Wilsons production of an Ibsen play in a Cambridge theatre.
Paul Newman and Joann Woodward were in attendance.
Synthesis of music, lighting, costumes and furniture design.

  1. "...there was no one in america that wanted to work with bob or me"

interesting analogy...quite a few really outstanding black jazz musicians left america for europe, often time settling in paris...

...many of whom lived their last days there/here

  2. I saw and heard Glass perform once on a concert organ in Rotterdam during his purist minimalist days. Which was ... looking for a word to describe it ... different?! Last time I listened to my recording of Einstein on the Beach about a year ago and must say I enjoyed it somewhat more than on previous occasions. For me this is one of slowly acquired taste - must be good wine. I'll try again!

  3. i was staying at the concord lafayette hotel in paris circa 1982

i went to the lobby and heard some wonderful live jazz

when i checked it out i discovered that is was the american jazz saxophonist, Eddie Lockjaw Davis - playing at 6:00 pm in a freakin' hotel lobby to 10 people or so!

i was traveling with a oil bidness colleague from new orleans (also named eddie). i said this was fantastic, man straight ahead jazz. he said that was not jazz. huh? he said he was from new orleans and that he knew what he was talkin' about. i asked him to give me an example and he said Al Hirt - that defined jazz. i said you don't know what jazz is, my friend. he got pissed off and left and would not talk to me for days, then weeks, then years...

Eddie Lockjaw Davis died in Paris on November 3rd, 1986...where he was loved and accepted...

  5. Apparently definition and origins of jazz are one of the most frequent search terms in Google ... As I remarked yesterday: Before, during or after the dust of all "analysis" by whatever instant experts (myself included) has settled, all that matters is if you like what you hear. Go, Wes, go! Besides: you and I haven't listened to each other in 20 years and gotten away with it, so it can be done! QED.

P.S. One place where you will rarely if ever hear jazz these days is ... New Orleans. :(
