What if this is the end of deepwater drilling?

I think we should discuss what it would mean to the economy and the world if deep water offshore oil exploration were outlawed in the wake of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. The United States Government has a long history of inaction in the face of credible warnings, followed by overreaction after something has gone terribly wrong.For example, the nuclear power industry in the United States was basically halted in the wake of the Three Mile Island nuclear powerplant mishap back in 1979.
